A review of potassium nutrition in pistachios is presented and research perspectives in this area are discussed. Very limited information is available about K nutrition in pistachios. Recent studies indicate that K uptake and distribution are driven by fruit development, with the crop serving as a sink. K uptake occurs mainly during the nut-fill period, with little uptake during the spring vegetative flush and postharvest periods. K fertilization is found to be effective in increasing leaf K status, nut yield and quality. However, no guidelines for K fertilization exist and no generally accepted yield-based K diagnostic criteria have been developed. Further studies on K nutrition should be conducted in association with problems encountered in pistachio production, such as soil moisture regimes and nutrient interactions, in order to optimize the K fertilizer program.
