Nitrogen in peach trees: is post-harvest fertilizer necessary?

Trials were carried out between 1994 and 1997 in Balandran, France to determine the effects of N fertilizer applications made at the end of the summer (postharvest) on the vegetative growth and yields of peaches in the following year. A number of different application schedules were compared. Yields in 1997 for 2 otherwise identical fertilizer regimes were 37 kg/tree with a late-summer N application compared with 30 kg/tree without it. Average fruit weight and refractive index were also significantly increased by the late-summer N application.
