Effect of plant growth regulators on the postharvest life of tuberose cv. Double.

The effects of benzyladenine, gibberellic acid, NAA and maleic hydrazide at concentrations of 50 or 100 ppm on the vase life of cut tuberose spikes were examined. Benzyladenine or gibberellic acid at 100 ppm were the most effective in improving the water uptake, maintaining a better water balance and thereby increasing the fresh weight of flowers which finally contributed to the increased vase life (10.22 and 10.33 days, respectively) and increased number of florets which opened (61.73 and 56.89%, respectively) per spike. By adding 100 ppm benzyladenine to the vase water petal senescence was delayed and freshness maintained for a longer time than with 100 ppm gibberellic acid.
