Unthreshed, big baled energy grain was grown, harvested and delivered to power plants and heating stations for experimental combustion. The 3 local areas growing the grain comprised 40 farms with a total yield of 375 ha of energy grain grown on set-aside land. Two surveys were conducted for 1995-96, one detailed and covering a few farms, and the other considerably less detailed but covering all farms. A gross capacity of 2.3 ha/h was obtained on the energy grain using a 14" mower to cut the crop. A gross capacity of 23.8 t/h was obtained for big balers where no previous swath treatment had been made, and 29.6 t/h for previous swath treatment. The average weight of the energy grain bales was 612 kg without swathe treatment and 629 with (the average weight of straw bales is 523 kg). On a few farms the energy grain was harvested by combine harvester, resulting in a gross capacity of 19.9 t/h. Transportation costs of the bales by tractors and lorries, and postharvest losses are also discussed.
