Substantial losses of witloof chicory crops have occurred in recent years due to Phytophthora cryptogea. Current methods of protecting the plant from this pathogen involve the application of chemical agents to the roots during storage and forcing of the roots. During forcing, controlled application of the nutrient solution also helps to minimize crop damage. Research at the Station Experimentale de l'Endive (FNPE - Ctifl) is directed at investigating the means by which plants are contaminated in the field and during forcing, in addition to developing techniques for disinfecting recycle water, early detection of the parasite and evaluating the susceptibility of different varieties to Phytophthora.
