Postharvest testing of 27 cultivars of oats grown in Ireland over an 8-year period demonstrated wide variations between cultivars and between growing seasons for the following quality parameters: hectolitre and 1000-grain weights, and contents of hull, protein and fat. Some 15% of the 214 samples evaluated had hectolitre weights below the Irish purchasing standard of 50 kg/hl. The cultivars Peniarth, Kynon, Barra and Mirabel performed consistently well, while Barra oats had the highest dietary fibre content. These data in combination with the agronomic and storage performance of the oats were used by the Department of Agriculture and Food for the Recommended List of cereal cultivars which is issued to merchants, farmers and the oat processing industry.
