The effect of preharvest treatment with CaCl2 (0.3 or 0.5%) on the quality of greenhouse-grown muskmelon fruits during storage (at 5 or 25 deg C for 20 days) was investigated. Control fruits lost the most weight; weight loss was faster at 25 deg . There was no difference in flesh firmness between control and CaCl2-treated fruits just after harvest. CaCl2-treated fruits maintained a higher flesh firmness than control fruits during storage. The soluble solids content of CaCl2-treated fruits was higher than that of the control after the first few days of storage. The soluble solids content decreased faster at 25 than at 5 deg . The Ca content of the mesocarp tissue of control fruits was 120.4 mg/kg, compared with 136.1 and 146.6 mg/kg for the 0.3 and 0.5% applications of CaCl2, respectively. Of the sugars investigated, sucrose showed the largest variation with storage. The decrease in sucrose content with storage was reduced by CaCl2 treatment but only for the first 10 days of storage. Changes in g
lucose and fructose contents seemed to depend on changing sucrose contents. Although changes in the content of total sugars showed similar patterns in all treatments, total sugar content of fruits stored at 25 deg rapidly decreased with storage.
