Chemical regulation of post-harvest life of Jasminum sambac.

In studies in 1996 at Thrissur, Kerala, India, Jasminum sambac flowers were treated with the following chemicals, either by preharvest sprays 1 day before harvest or postharvest treatment (soaking for 1 min) of loose flowers and unopened buds: AgNO3, BA [benzyladenine], CCC [chlormequat] and triadimefon (each at 5 concentrations from 5 to 25 ppm). Water treatment and no treatment served as controls. Physiological weight loss was reduced in flowers and buds by preharvest application of all chemicals. Keeping quality of open flowers was the same (2 days) for all treatments including controls. However, in unopened buds, the chemicals at higher concentrations and the water control gave a keeping quality of 4 days compared with 3 days for the untreated control. With the postharvest treatments, physiological weight loss of opened flowers was not affected by the different treatments; for unopened buds dipping in water reduced physiological weight loss to 67.5%. With regard to longevity of opened flower

s, only triadimefon (20 or 25 ppm) could extend it by 24 h compared with the other treatments; there were no significant effects observed for unopened buds. The results demonstrate the better performance of preharvest sprays.
