An overview of the Philippine food industry is presented focusing in particular on its inability to meet domestic requirements. Although investment in the food industry is increasing as a result of participation in GATT/WTO, constraints to increased production remain and include: low level of use and high costs of inputs; lack of credit and financial assistance; lack of infrastructure; and ineffective government intervention in marketing. Other problems include a lack of postharvest technology, ineffective quarantine measures and inadequate training and research.
