The characteristics and uses of tamarind (Tamarindus indica) are briefly described in sections covering: botanical/silvicultural characteristics; geographical distribution; morphology; phenology; propagation; uses; fruit harvesting, yield and postharvest handling; active principles of the kernel powder (used as a soil stabilizer, in brick manufacture, and for the preparation of polysaccharides with gelling properties) and its processing; and marketing of the fruits and kernel powder.
