Postharvest handling influences the extent of postharvest losses, final quality, and the market value of horticultural crops. Modern technologies applied in grading, packaging, precooling, storage and transportation, which minimize losses, preserve quality and enhance value-added of horticultural crops, are used successfully in Developed Countries. Some modifications, particularly of the equipment and facilities used, may be necessary in order to make them practical in small-scale farming systems. The modernization of postharvest handling technologies in Taiwan is described.
