Factors having the greatest impact on global horticultural research are identified as: environment; labour requirements; technology; capital requirements; education and training; and consumption. The current status of horticultural research is described in terms of organization of research; expectations and needs; priority areas (genetics, biotechnology, propagation, integrated production systems, postharvest handling, storage and processing, marketing); research policy; and structural models of agri-R&D and cooperation (three case studies are presented of the EU, World Bank's CGIAR; and AVRDC). How to develop systems of research cooperation is considered.
