Dynamics of agriculture-industry linkages.

This paper examines the changes in Indian agriculture over time that have a bearing on industry-agriculture linkages and measures the trend in the agriculture-industry linkages. The data pertain to the period 1950/51-1996/97. In recent decades agriculture is characterized by intensive use of purchased inputs for which it depends on the industrial sector. Increased rural incomes have induced consumption of items such as toiletries and consumer durables. Also, the industrial sector's interest in agri-linked ventures increased in recent times especially because of investment opportunities in postharvest handling. The results indicate that the influence of agriculture on industrial sector production measured in terms of elasticity increased over time, notwithstanding a deceleration in the more recent period. Elasticity of real GDP from the industrial sector with respect to that from agriculture was higher in the 1980s and early 1990s than in the pre-1980 period.
