The efficacy of Milton solution (containing 1% v/v sodium hypochlorite) and four wood ashes prepared from Vernonia amygdalina (Va), Tectona spp. (Ts) Gliricidia sepium (Gs) and Cassia siamea [Senna siamea] (Cs) were tested against storage rot of kolanuts (Cola nitida). The effects of the nut treatments on microbial contamination caused principally by Botryodiplodia theobromae and Fusarium pallidoroseum were also investigated. The various ash treatments (at a rate of 3 g/kg of kolanuts (dry powder)) gave a significant reduction in percentage incidence of storage rot. Overall, the efficacies were Milton solution>Vernonia amygdalina Tectonaspp>Cassia siamea>Gliricidia sepium. Qualitative analysis of the different ashes were also carried out to determine the active ingredient and the pH values. The active ingredient in the four ashes was potassium carbonate (K2Co3) with a different pH value for each ash assayed. It is suggested that kolanut treatment with wood ash should be a cheap, alternative pres
ervative for the control of storage rot of kolanut.
