Automated systems in 2 centres for sorting, weighing and packing kiwifruits in plastic containers, according to size, are described. At one centre, 3% of the fruits are sampled before proceeding to the handling of the bulk of the delivery. The results of the sampling are processed in order to arrive at a price for the grower. The bulk of the crop moves along a conveyor belt while workers remove any diseased or damaged fruits. It is calibrated, gently brushed to remove any roughness, weighed and despatched. Possible improvements to the system, notably to reduce any heavy lifting by operators, are discussed.
