Current status of world horticultural research. I. Overview of research.

Notes are presented on the current status of research under the headings global picture, genetic resources, plant improvement, propagation and nursery, plant protection, crop production, postharvest, economics and marketing for each of the main horticultural sectors (fruits, vegetables, ornamentals, viticulture, medicinal and aromatic plants). The major trends are identified and discussed. The role of interactions between the industry and research in determining research undertaken, staff numbers involved in research, funding, partnerships and international cooperation are also considered. It is concluded that very dramatic changes in the economic context of horticulture linked to new trade agreements and globalization are calling for greater flexibility in research. As financial resources are not increasing there will need to be greater cooperation at national, regional and international levels, but a dilemma is faced as research organizations are becoming more competitive.
