Grapevines (cv. Italia) growing in Petrolina, Pernambuco, Brazil, were supplied with N (100% urea, 70% urea + 30% Ca(NO3)2, or 35% urea + 65% Ca(NO3)2) through fertigation in 3 split applications (total 200 g/vine). Some vines were also treated with Ca by immersing clusters in 0.4% Ca solutions at fortnightly intervals starting 59 days after pruning (5 treatments). Berry colour and cluster appearance, total soluble solids, total titratable acidity, pH and pathogenic decay were analysed after 0, 14, 28, 42 and 56 days of cold storage (2-4 deg C and 90-95% RH). Only cluster appearance and decay showed significant differences between treatments. Clusters treated with 35% of N as urea and 65% as Ca(NO3)2 had less water loss after 56 days of storage than clusters from other treatments. Dipping clusters in Ca also reduced water loss. Storage decay (caused by Alternaria alternata, Cladosporium herbarum, Penicillium sp., Rhizopus spp. and Aspergillus niger) was least in berries from vines supplied with
35% of N as urea and 65% as Ca(NO3)2; additional Ca treatment had no beneficial effect on storage decay.
