Postharvest conservation of guava cv. Paluma fruits.

Guava cv. Paluma fruit from the Sao Francisco river valley (Petrolina, PE, Brazil) were immersed for 20 min in 0.5, 1.0 or 1.5% Ca solution, wrapped in paper or transparent polyethylene and stored at ambient temperature (28 deg C and 60% RH) or refrigerated (10 deg C and 90% RH). The following parameters were evaluated: weight and peel green colour losses and total soluble solids. It was found that when fruits were harvested just before ripening (fruits reaching complete growth but still with green peel) they maintained marketable quality for up to 16 days when wrapped in transparent polyethylene bags and stored refrigerated at 10 deg C. The same postharvest life was obtained by treatment with 0.5 or 1.0% Ca.
