Postharvest life and biochemical constituents of "Sonia Meilland" cut roses as affected by chloride salts.

Five different chloride salts (AlCl3, CoCl2, KCl, MgCl2, and NiCl2) were used in the holding solution at concentrations of 100, 200, 300 and 400 ppm to find out their effects on the postharvest life and quality of Sonia Meilland cut roses. All the chloride salts had a beneficial effect compared with untreated controls. Longest vase life, improved water uptake, increased flower diameter and fresh weight were obtained with 100 ppm AlCl3, 200 ppm each of CoCl2 and MgCl2, 300 ppm NiCl2 and 400 ppm KCl. These treatments resulted in significant rise in total soluble sugar and reducing sugar content of petal tissues from harvest to senescence and a fall in total free amino acids over the untreated control. Among the salts investigated, NiCl2 at 300 ppm was the best and other treatments in descending order were 200 ppm CoCl2>100 ppm AlCl3>400 ppm KCl>200 ppm MgCl2.
