Dynamics of post-harvest sucrose losses in sugarcane during late-crushing period.

Sucrose losses in the harvested cane were evaluated in two sugarcane cultivars during late-crushing period. Cv. CoS 767 was more prone to sucrose loss than cv. CoLk 8102, primarily due to inversion process within the cane. Decline in commercial cane sugar content in CoS 767 was around 80% compared to 25% in CoLk 8102, after one week of staling period. Monetary loss to growers as a result of cane staling was estimated to be around Rs. 3500/day per 100 t cane. Efficacy of mill sanitation biocides under laboratory and mill conditions were evaluated especially in context of minimizing biological inversion. Addition of organosulphur compound in the last mill juice was effective in controlling biological losses of sucrose and was better than quaternary ammonium compounds.
