The potential for cherimoya to become a major subtropical fruit crop for both resource-poor farmers and the commercial sector with international market outlets is analysed. The different phases in the development of any new crop are presented (market assessment; identification of wild germplasm for used in breeding and improvement programmes, and cultivar assessment; development of optimal production techniques; and commercial production and processing). Difficulties in producing cherimoyas are highlighted and the case for its development is presented through results from research in Ecuador and literature data. Research needs include the development of propagation techniques including in vitro propagation, cultivar improvement, the development of environmentally friendly production techniques including fruit fly control, processing techniques and reduction of postharvest losses.
