Ripeness indicators and storage conditions for Japanese plum cultivars.

Seven Japanese plum cultivars were examined over two seasons for their storage potential at different stages of ripeness. The cultivars were in order of harvest during the season: Royal Z., Black Amber, Black Diamond, Laroda, Friar, Angelino and 440 (Black Jim). The two early cultivars could be stored in regular 0 deg C air storage for 3 weeks and the two latest cultivars for 7 weeks. Most of the cultivars did well in the commercial controlled atmosphere storage for 6-10 weeks. An exception was the cultivar 440, which developed internal browning during controlled atmosphere storage, but not regular air storage. Each cultivar was evaluated from 3 harvests each season, and recommendations for harvest measurements for fruits suitable for storage are presented.
