A brief overview of the present status of apple production in China and its main problems, is presented. Apple is the most important fruit crop in China, occupying more than 7 million ha spread over 4 main geographical regions. China is the largest apple producer in the world (>17 million t in 1996). The main cultivars have originated from the USA, New Zealand and Japan. The most recent plantings have included the cultivars Fuji, Starkrimson Delicious and Jonagold. Orchard management techniques used in China are briefly discussed, in particular fertilizer requirements, irrigation, flower and fruit thinning, improving flower initiation, fruit bagging, prevention of winter injury, training and pruning. One of the main problems is low yields/ha, the best regions only managing 4.48 t/ha compared with 20-35 t/ha for some other countries. Poor fruit quality is attributed to many factors, including poor postharvest handling and storage practices. The introduction of new growing and management technique
s needs to be improved.
