Influence of harvest date on the postharvest responses of allium-vegetable species.

Lifting onion and garlic bulbs at different stages (between the start of leaf drying to the end of leaf drying) affected storage losses during long term outdoor ventilated storage in 2-year trials. Harvesting at later stages increased storage losses caused by sprouting, rooting (in onions), outer scale cracking (garlic), storage rots and weight loss, reducing the percentage of marketable onions by up to 20%. Late harvesting increased the incidence (up to 45%) of a physiological disorder (watery scales) in onions. These responses are discussed in connection with metabolism following changes in dormancy and senescence of plant organs. It was concluded that the best time to harvest onions was at 90% bending when 40-50% of leaves were dried, and the best time to harvest garlic was when 30-70% of leaves were dried.
