The effects of 13 rootstocks on fruit quality and maturity of the apple cultivar Jonagold were investigated in Poland in 1997/98 and 1998/99. Postharvest ripening was studied at room temperature. Fruits were also stored for up to 6 months at 0 deg C. Fruits from trees on P60 and 62-396 started the climacteric 5-7 days earlier than fruits from PB-4. Fruits were more yellow at harvest from trees on P60, 62-396 and M.26; fruit colour was weak on PB-4 and fruits from these trees coloured most slowly during storage. Leaf Ca was highest for trees on B146 and P60. Fruitlets and fruits from trees on B146 and PB-4 generally had a high Ca concentration. In the second year of study, rootstock had a considerable effect on maturation and storage ability. Fruits from trees on B146 had the lowest respiration rates and ethylene production after 2 and 4 months' storage but not after 6 months.
