Taking historical examples, it is shown that improved agricultural productivity has stimulated rural-to-urban migration. Urban growth in Britain and America and the connection between demand and distribution are reviewed. The risk of innovation and patterns of urban growth are assessed. Sections then look at the links between agricultural research, production and food security focusing on the neglect of urban food security. The recommendations from a group representative of food and agroindustries, government and non-government organizations and development agencies, that emerged from a meeting in India are then discussed. These focus on the role of rural agroindustries in urban food security. Post-production systems are analysed with regard to diagnosis, design and development. Rural agroindustrial development in India is then considered along with the respective roles of the government and private sector in such development. Finally a challenge is issued to food scientists to devise integrated
post-production systems to ensure future food security for the urban population.
