In 1984, a sprouting broccoli breeding programme was initiated at Embrapa Hortalicas to increase the assortment available to producers. This programme resulted in the release of open-pollinated cultivar Ramoso de Brasilia, developed through 6 cycles of selection between and within full-sib families derived from elite plants of a population collected in Itapecerica da Serra, Sao Paulo. Ramoso de Brasilia is recommended for Brazilian winter cropping, although it can also be used in mild summer conditions. With a short growth cycle and high yields, the cultivar produces a high number of lateral sprouts, with soft and long stems, making harvesting easy. Inflorescences are bright-green and of excellent market appearance, as well as having high cooking quality. In crops grown in Brasilia little inflorescence soft rot and long postharvest storage were observed.
