Different methods of assessing soyabean seed quality have been studied, with the purpose of finding a simple and objective method that can be practically used to select cultivars resistant to seed deterioration. Different types of seeds were exposed to different levels of artificial deterioration (72 and 96 h) in an accelerated ageing chamber with high humidity (100%) and high temperature (40 deg C), to simulate the deterioration that occurs in the field during the maturity, harvest and postharvest periods. The deteriorated seeds were evaluated with the traditional standard germination test and the results were compared with the electric conductivity and gravity tests, as alternative methods. According to the results, both alternative methods resulted being simple and easy to use in a genetic improvement programme. The electric conductivity test was most useful for its speed and a better correlation with the standard germination test. On the contrary, the gravity test, even though different leve
ls of deterioration were detected, showed wide variability and did not have a good correlation with the standard germination test.
