Postharvest senescence in florets of cut flowers of Lilium cv. Casa Blanca was investigated. Decreases in the fresh weight of all florets, except the upper most floret, were similar. Vase life of the florets was not affected by location on the stem. Ethylene production by florets increased steeply from the 5th day after flowering, which corresponded with loss in vase life. Ethylene production from stamens and pistils was higher than that from tepals. Pretreatment of cut flowers with ACC and STS [silver thiosulfate] induced changes in floret fresh weight. STS pretreatment significantly prolonged vase life (7.4 days compared with 6 days in the control).
