Treating apples with salt solutions and laser irradiation before storage.

Comparative tests were made on treating apples before storage with various chemicals: antioxidant solution (Santoquin), calcium chloride, and anolytes and catolytes [the parts of the solutions around the anode and cathode, respectively] resulting from electrolysis of calcium chloride and sodium chloride solutions. The effect of low-intensity irradiation with medical lasers was also investigated. Catolytes of calcium chloride and sodium chloride reduced physiological damage to the fruit, and anolytes reduced bacterial damage. The probability of various treatments having a beneficial effect was determined, and the results are displayed graphically for: the anolyte of calcium chloride, catolyte of calcium chloride, calcium chloride plus laser treatment, laser treatment alone, antioxidant, calcium chloride, and no treatment (control). The design layout of the laser irradiation unit (LOPP-15) is described and illustrated; the treatment pulse power is 5 W, and the permissible treatment regimes are 1-5

000 Hertz, pulse duration 5x10-7-15x10-7 s; laser pulse 7x10-8 s; current 0.15 A from a 24-volt accumulator. The specific costs of laser treatment were much lower than those of treating the fruit with chemicals; laser treatment of fruit in a container reduced losses by 41.5%.
