Influence of storage cooling conditions and packaging on the postharvest behaviour of sweet corn.

This study evaluated the behaviour of sweetcorn (commercial hybrid AG-1051) stored under ambient or refrigerated conditions, with or without precooling, using 2 kinds of plastic packages. Metabolic activity was evaluated through determination of starch at the beginning of the experiment and after 24 and 48 h of storage. After 24 h of storage, significant differences were observed for precooling, while after 48 h under ambient conditions (27 deg C) starch content increased significantly in comparison to storage under refrigerated conditions (10 deg C). The use of special plastic packages (multilayer with high gas permeability) resulted in the lower starch percentages than stretchable PVC.
