The effect of different low oxygen controlled atmosphere regimes on the quality of apples.

Elstar, Rubin, Sampion and Jonagold apples harvested at optimum maturity for long-term storage were cooled and stored at 2 deg C in controlled atmospheres (CA) of CO2 + O2 at 0% + 1.5% (ultra low oxygen, ULO), 2% + 2% or 5% + 3% (low oxygen CA), or in air. For Jonagold, firmness after storage was up to 80% of initial values and overall quality was retained after 9 months of storage, with no incidence of physiological disorders. The eating quality of Elstar apples was good after 6 months' storage in 2% + 2% and 5% + 3% CA conditions. Rubin fruits retained good quality after 5 months' storage in 2% + 2% CA conditions. Flesh firmness declined at a rate of 0.06 kg/cm2 per week over that period. Quality of Sampion fruits was retained best by storage in 2% + 2% or 0% + 1.5% CA conditions. Under these conditions firmness declined at a rate of 0.06 kg/cm2 per week during the first 5 months.
