Experiments were conducted in 1993-96 to determine the optimum storage temperature for fruits of plum cultivars Valor and Bluefre and to investigate the influence of initial maturity on poststorage quality, particularly the development of physiological disorders. Fruits harvested on 3 dates (pre-optimum, optimum and post-optimum) from 5- to 7-year-old trees in Skierniewice, Poland, were stored at 22-24 (room temperature), 4, 1 or -0.5 deg C for up to 6.5 weeks. The optimum storage temperature for both cultivars was -0.5 deg C, at which temperature ethylene production and water loss were minimal. Restriction of fruit transpiration by placing fruits in polyethylene bags reduced the incidence of skin shrivelling. The susceptibility of plum cultivars to physiological disorders was influenced by fruit maturity at harvest; fruits picked at the earliest date and stored at -0.5 deg C were the least susceptible to disorders.
