Evaluation of different types of sugar for improving postharvest life and quality of cut roses.

Water uptake, flower diameter and vase life of cut flowers of rose [Rosa hybrida] cv. Happiness were recorded after dipping in sucrose, dextrose [glucose] monohydrate, glucose anhydrous, D-fructose, D-mannose, maltose or lactose (all at 1, 2, 3 or 4%). Distilled water was used as the control treatment. With the exception of D-mannose, all of the sugars were beneficial for cut flower quality. The best concentrations of sucrose, glucose monohydrate, glucose anhydrous, D-fructose, maltose and lactose (longest vase life, greatest flower diameter and greatest water uptake) were 3, 4, 4, 3, 1 and 3%, respectively. The sugars initially reduced water uptake, but finally caused a marked increase in water absorption. The most effective treatment was D-fructose at 3%. Apart from extending vase life, the treatments also increased the fresh and dry weight of cut roses cv. Happiness.
