Stress-strain relationship for fruit firmness estimation.

Experiments with Gloster, Jonagold, Idared and Sampion apples indicated that the elasticity meter, a non-destructive device for measuring the modulus of elasticity, could accurately measure small changes in fruit firmness and should be suitable for evaluating fruit quality before and after storage. Results using the fruit strain meter suggested that the contact area of the 3 mm plunger is too small for firmness estimations based on strain measurement.
