Concentration of mineral constituents in apples cv. Gloster and some factors determining their quality.

The relationship between the mineral composition of Gloster apples harvested from 11 commercial plantations in Poland and their susceptibility to bitter pit (BP) and internal breakdown (IB) was investigated in a 3-year trial. The concentration of mineral constituents was determined 2-3 weeks before harvest. Fruits were harvested at maturity, stored in a cold store for 150-165 days and then assessed for incidence of BP and IB. BP incidence was 2.4% in fruits containing 5.2 mg Ca/100 g fresh weight and 136 mg K/100 g fresh weight (K:Ca ratio of 26.1), 7.3% in fruits with a K:Ca ratio of 38.0 and 13.8% in fruits with a K:Ca ratio of 47.3. Fruit Ca content was a more reliable indicator of susceptibility to IB than the K:Ca ratio.
