Four apple cultivars (Gala, Lobo, Gloster and Elstar) were subjected to hand or chemical (NAA, urea, NAA + urea, CPPU [forchlorfenuron] or benzyladenine) fruit thinning treatments at different stages of flowering in 1993 and 1996. Hand thinning at the end of June generally increased the size, firmness and sugar content of fruits, but also increased the incidence of bitter pit during storage. Application of benzyladenine often increased fruit firmness and soluble solids content during storage and reduced the incidence of rotting and shrivelling of fruits. However, benzyladenine application also increased the incidence of brown core. The effect of CPPU application on storage quality depended on the concentration, application date and cultivar.
