Genetic variation for tiprot in asparagus.

Tiprot is an occasionally severe postharvest disorder of asparagus which may affect the produce in transport, storage or retail outlets. Symptoms include darkening and softening of the spear tip, progressing to disintegration with invasion by bacteria. Tiprot in asparagus appears to have a physiological origin and to be genetically controlled, but the breeding of cultivars with reduced incidence of tiprot may be difficult. Relatively small variations were found in the percentage of tiprot between the commercial cultivars UC 157 and Jersey Giant and 12 experimental breeding lines whose parents were selected because of high specific combining ability.
