Susceptibility of fruit to damage: evaluation for peach (1st note).

Experiments were conducted with peaches (cv. Fairtime) to assess the importance of different mechanical factors including knocking, dropping, compression and abrasion in causing harvest and postharvest damage, and how this varied with the morphological characteristics of the fruit. A provisional multiple linear regression model developed to describe the relationship between dropping and damage is described. Parameters included in the equation were the height from which the fruit dropped, the thickness of the pulp at the point of impact, and the distance between the points of impact and stalk insertion; the 1st parameter was positively correlated with damage, and the last 2 parameters were negatively correlated.
