Autumn peach cultivation in Sicily: environmental, varietal and cultural aspects.

 

Some aspects of the cultivation of autumn peaches in Sicily are considered, and traditional and new areas of autumn peach production are identified. The importance of altitude and the microclimate are discussed, together with the concept of chilling units in autumn as a limiting factor to successful peach cultivation. Attributes of traditional and new autumn peach varieties are compared, including maturation time, colour, fruit weight, and sugar and organic acid contents. Choice of rootstock is considered in relation to Sicilian soil characteristics, and it is suggested that cv. GF 677 rootstock is often the obligatory choice. Agronomic practices are discussed, including tree spacing in traditional and new areas of peach cultivation. The contribution of the autumn peach sector to the Sicilian economy is considered, together with postharvest problems and the measures needed for an efficient distribution system.
