Cut roses cv. Happiness were treated at the tight bud stage for 24 h at 4-6 deg C with various combinations of 8-hydroxyquinoline citrate (HQC; 200 ppm), citric acid (300 ppm), aluminium sulfate (AS; 300 ppm), 3% sucrose (Su) and water (control) and then packed either in newspaper, kraft paper or cellophane sheet. The longest vase life (7.6 days), lowest percentage of petal wilting (4.7%), highest water uptake (68 ml) and the largest flower diameter (9 cm) resulted from pulsing treatment with Su + AS + HQC. The vase life was increased by 3 days, with the Su + AS + HQC pulsing treatment compared with the control. Cut roses packed in cellophane sheets for 24 h had the longest vase life (4.67 days), lowest percentage of petal wilting (6%), largest flower diameter (7.2 cm), the lowest percentage of reflexed petals (35%) and the highest water uptake (58 ml).
