A review of oil palm production in Malaysia over the last 100 years, and methods of improvement for the future are presented. Progress in oil palm production is discussed in terms of 3 main areas: yield potential; production; and prediction. Most improvements in the past have been due to breeding programmes which more recently have been focused on pest and disease resistance. Biotechnology has been used to increase yield and also influence the quality of the oil. Realizing the increased potential requires improved management systems such as planting density, earliness, soil fertility, site, fruiting patterns, harvesting and postharvest handling. The future of oil palm production needs to be focused on total productivity as both oil and biomass could be economic products. Thus partitioning of dry matter is examined in relation to yield and an understanding of the physiological process required to predict yield is discussed.
