A review of the present state of research into various aspects of tamarind production is presented. Topics covered include: origin and distribution, crop improvement, reproductive morphology, cytology, germplasm potential, yield, crop management, propagation (seed, vegetative, grafting, air-layering and tissue culture), adaptability to soil and air pollution and suitability to waste lands, mycorrhizal associations, pest and disease problems, postharvest technology, fruit quality, marketing and tamarind products (concentrate, seed, kernel powder seed testa, timber, medicinal use). Export data for tamarind products from India during 1992-1997 are tabulated.
