Beans in the farming system and domestic economy of Uganda: a tale of two parishes.

 

The objectives of this publication are: (1) to provide a detailed description of the bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) producing environment in two Ugandan parishes prior to the introduction of two cultivars released by the National Research Organization, K132 and K1312; and (2) to highlight the types of data needed for measuring social impact, an under-researched area in the wider field of impact assessment. The two study locations are Nabongo Parish in Mbale District and Lugala Parish in Mukono District. Information was collected on various aspects of the farming system and on expectations regarding the impact of the new bean varieties (n=158, 1995). Information was also collected on bean consumption patterns in June 1995 (a postharvest period when beans are in abundance) and September 1996 (a period of relative bean scarcity).
