Results of studies on reducing losses that occur during shipping and handling of cut flowers are discussed. It was shown that the proper handling temperature for flowers other than tropicals is close to the freezing point, 0 deg C (32 deg F). Strategies and techniques for improving postharvest temperature management are considered. These include improved precooling, use of surface transportation, disposable time-temperature indicators, and the use of refrigerated air containers. A pilot temperature management programme conducted with cut flowers in California is briefly described, and the value of transportation in boxes with water or preservative is discussed.
