Influence of precooling on postharvest life and respiration rate of Raktagandha cut roses.

Raktagandha roses cut in the morning were either sprayed with ice cold water (2 plus or minus 1 deg C) for 15, 30 and 45 minutes at 3-minute intervals or cold stored at 4 deg C for 8, 16 and 24 h. Both sets were transferred to test tubes containing tap water where their postharvest life and flower quality were studied at 25 plus or minus 1 deg C and 60-65% RH. A set of cut flowers without any precooling treatment served as the control. Respiration rate was measured immediately after harvest, just after precooling and at senescence. Cold storage at 4 deg C for 24 h and 45-minute ice cold water spray treatments increased the vase life (from 6.0-6.25 days to 9.4 and 8.8 days, respectively) and flower quality significantly over the control flowers and decreased the respiration rate of the roses just after treatment. However, at senescence, all the treatments including the control showed a marked reduction in their respiration rates.
