Commercial handling influences quality and ripening of Bartlett pears.

Studies were conducted on the effect of postharvest handling on quality and ripening of Bartlett pears. It was found that packed fruit from commercial packhouses often ripened without ethylene treatment or cold storage while fruit carefully picked and not packed required at least 24 h of ethylene conditioning or cold storage. Fruit softened and changes in skin colour from green to yellow occurred faster in commercially picked samples put through a packing line compared to fruit picked commercially but not put through a packing line. Increased postharvest handling produced increased rates of ethylene production and respiration in the fruit. Suggestions to reduce postharvest damage and consequently improve fruit quality are made.
