Determination of post harvest losses in sugarcane commercial variety Gulabi-95 (BF-129).

A laboratory study in Pakistan was carried out in 2000 to determine the postharvest losses in sugarcane cv. Gulabi-95 (BF-129). Leaving canes in the field by 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6 days after harvest resulted in dry matter loss by 1.27, 2.88, 5.35, 8.00, 9.66 and 11.56%, reduction in brix% by 0.62, 2.31, 4.15, 5.84, 7.89 and 9.84%, decrease in commercial cane sugar content by 0.68, 2.50, 4.24, 5.88, 7.90 and 9.92%, and purity reduced by 0.034, 0.069, 0.104, 0.127, 0.150 and 0.185%, respectively, while the fibre content was increased by 0.22, 0.44, 0.52, 0.66, 0.96 and 1.11% and glucose content increased by 1.54, 2.88, 3.84, 5.18, 6.53 and 8.06%. It is concluded that cane should be sent to a mill within 24 hours after harvesting.
