The effects of various factors which may influence the development of core breakdown [brownheart] in pears during storage were studied. Conference pears were more likely to develop the disorder than Doyenne du Comice pears. Conference fruits were particularly susceptible when stored in high CO2 and low O2 concentrations. Large fruits and late-harvested fruits were also more likely to develop the disorder and the disorder developed more during storage at 1 deg C than at -1 deg C.
