Gliocladium catenulatum strain J1446, isolated from Finnish field soil, is the active ingredient of a new biofungicide developed by Kemira Agro Oy. The antagonist has been widely tested on a range of horticultural crops in laboratory and glasshouse conditions and shown good control efficacy of seed- and soil-borne diseases caused by Pythium, Phytophthora, Rhizoctonia and Alternaria, foliar diseases caused by Didymella and Botrytis, and storage diseases caused by Helminthosporium and Rhizoctonia. The product is registered in the USA under the trade name Primastop, and recommended for the control of damping-off on vegetable, herb and ornamental seedlings, root and stem rot diseases in vegetables and ornamentals, Didymella in cucumber and tomato, grey mould in ornamentals, and fungal diseases in stored potatoes. Registration in the EU under the trade name PreStop is in progress. Further testing of the biofungicide will be done to verify the effect on Pythium root rot in rockwool cultivation and to
evaluate the control efficacy against Botrytis on strawberry in field conditions.
